This is a question I am frequently asked and arises out of a natural instinct to protect ourselves against pain.  On the one hand, some of my customers show very little sensitivity to the needles, and do not feel pain when the needles are inserted.  On the other hand, there may be increased sensitivity if an energy imbalance is present.  Further, individuals may feel more discomfort from the needles on one occasion than on another.  In my experience, hormonal increases, periods of stress and taking prolonged steroid medication appears to create greater sensitivity to acupuncture.  In general, however, acupuncture treatment is not painful, and when needling sensation occurs it does not last more than a few seconds.  The sensation is often described by many of my customers as not unpleasant, but invigorating.
